Who really owns your veterinary practice?

There’s a bigger shift happening in veterinary care and most pet parents don’t even realize it.

More veterinary practices are being bought by large corporations, including companies that also make pet food. Moves like Chewy acquiring Modern Animal are just one example, but it’s happening across the industry.

Right now, about a quarter of general practices are corporately owned, and that number jumps even higher for specialty and emergency clinics. On the surface, it can mean better equipment and more resources. But it also raises questions most pet parents aren’t thinking about when they walk into an exam room.

Veterinarians are busier than ever, often following standardized protocols in a system that isn’t always designed for long-term wellness. And when you start to look at who owns what, and where recommendations may be coming from, it changes how you see things.

This isn’t about distrusting your vet. It’s about understanding the system.

I break down what’s really happening behind the scenes, what it means for your pet, and how I personally navigate it over on Substack.
