Natural Flea & Tick Prevention for Dogs

My Fall Routine

By Toni Shelaske

I absolutely dread this time of year. Flea and tick prevention was one of the biggest topics I discussed with pet parents who walked in my stores. These pests can cause everything from itchy skin to serious illnesses in our pets.

The hardest part? Finding a safe flea and tick solution that works without exposing your dog to harsh chemicals.

Here in Pittsburgh, fall is the absolute worst time of year for flea and tick infestations. One day there are zero issues, and the next, fleas and ticks explode. That’s why I take a natural flea and tick prevention approach.

Why Choose Natural Flea and Tick Remedies for Dogs?

If you want to avoid chemical flea and tick treatments like I do, you’ll need a multi-layered approach. One product alone usually isn’t enough. The good news is, there are plenty of natural flea and tick remedies available for dogs from food-based support to sprays and herbal collars.  I’ve been in the pet shop world for decades, so let me share what’s worked best for me (and my customers) over the years.

Best Natural Flea and Tick Sprays & Powders

Topical support is another important layer of natural flea and tick control. Some of my favorite brands are:

Natural Flea & Tick Control Brands

You can also add an herbal flea and tick collar for extra coverage.

Ultrasonic Flea & Tick Protection

TICKLESS® Pet - Chemical-free, ultrasonic tick and flea device for pets is a chemical-free device that clips onto your dog’s collar and emits ultrasonic waves to repel insects. While not foolproof, it works great as part of a natural flea and tick prevention plan. Bonus: there’s also a version for humans!

Essential Tick Removal Tools Every Pet Parent Needs

Even with the best prevention, ticks will always be an issue. That’s why you should always have these tools at home:

  • Tick Key – simple and effective for larger ticks

  • Tick Twister – best for delicate areas like ears and around the eyes

  • Flea & tick comb – check your dog’s coat after every hike or outdoor adventure

  • Magnifying app on your phone – helps spot tiny pests you might miss

Diatomaceous Earth for Flea & Tick Control

Another safe, natural option is food-grade diatomaceous earth. Lightly sprinkle it on your dog’s coat (never use pool-grade). When fleas or ticks crawl through it, they die.

Pro tip: Place a white sheet on your floor to easily spot fleas or ticks that might’ve come inside.

Garlic for Dogs? Oh Yes, I Went There

This may surprise you, but I give my dogs a small amount of garlic. In fact, when used correctly, it helps boost their immune system and naturally repels fleas and ticks.

  • You can mince fresh garlic and mix it into your dog’s food.

  • Or, if that feels intimidating, try Earth Animal Daily Herbal Internal Powder. It’s an easy scoop-and-serve blend that supports immune health and repels pests naturally.

My dog Layla can be picky, but I do my best to keep this in her routine.

Final Thoughts: A Layered Approach to Natural Flea & Tick Prevention

No single product is 100% effective. The key to success is a multi-layered natural flea and tick prevention strategy:

  • Feed a natural oral supplement

  • Use a safe topical spray or collar

  • Try the ultrasonic device for added protection

  • Always check your dog after being outdoors

Yes, it takes a little more effort but your pets (and your family) will stay safer and healthier without relying on chemicals.
